Public Transportation in Jordan

CSBE has carried out two studies on public transportation in Jordan and also produced explanatory short films about the subject. The first study, which was carried out in association with, and through a seed grant from the Taqaddam Platform, focuses on the user’s experience in using public transportation in Amman. This study, which was part of Taqaddam’s Ma’an Nasel public transportation campaign, aims at collecting reliable information to help forge an informed understanding of the state of public transportation in Amman and Jordan for use in lobbying activities and public awareness campaigns. It also serves as a baseline for any discussions or initiatives relating to public transportation in Amman.
This Arabic language report presents an overview and information on studies and publications on public transportation in Jordan. It also presents an analysis of interviews with regular public transportation users, and outcomes of a field study that documents and evaluates public transportation trips.
In addition to the report, a short animated Arabic language film entitled “Basima’s Trip to Work” was produced. This film captures the daily experience of using public transportation in Jordan.
The second study, which was carried out in association with, and through support from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, is a policy study that examines how the country's policies regarding public transportation are being conceived and implemented, and also looks into the various forces that define it. It consequently looks into current policies and practices, but also examines realistic and applicable changes that may improve the quality of public transportation in the country.
The study also includes a review of the proposed Law for the Regulation of the Transportation of Passengers that submitted to the previous Parliament in 2015 / 2016. This draft law presents the overall positions of the authorities and various stakeholders (primarily operators) regarding the future of public transportation in the country.
In addition to the study, a short animated Arabic language film was produced about the changes that the draft law may bring about to the public transportation sector in the country.
