Jabal al-Jofeh Neighborhood Upgrading Project

This community-based project was carried out by the Center for the Study of the Built Environment (CSBE) in coordination with the Greater Amman Municipality in 2006.

The project aimed at providing feasible design solutions for upgrading public spaces in a neighborhood in the Jabal al-Jofeh district of Amman. It emphasized engaging the local community in the planning process of improving its surroundings and enabling it to reach its visions and express its needs. The project also aimed at increasing the community’s sense of ownership and belonging to their surrounding environment.

CSBE accordingly carried out preliminary studies and assessments of the neighborhood and of local needs. It also and organized a series of community meetings and conducted design charrettes to develop simple design ideas for the upgrading of spaces including a green pocket, sidewalks, and urban stairs.

Funding for this project was provided by the Goethe-Institut in Jordan.
