Exploring Public Space through Users' Behavior

A study carried out by the Center for the Study of the Built Environment (CSBE) in the summer of 2011

This CSBE study on public spaces in Amman concentrated on three streets that the Greater Amman Municipality rehabilitated to facilitate pedestrian activity: Rainbow Street in Jabal Amman, Wakalat Street in Sweifieh, and Culture Avenue in Shmeisani.

The aim of the study is to observe the behavioral patterns of users of public spaces to find out if these spaces are functioning successfully; to explore how well they are maintained; and to convey information about them to decision makers.

The study of the three streets concentrated on how the public uses them. Visits were carried out at various times of the day and various days of the week during the summer period, when they are at their busiest. The streets and the activities taking place in them were documented through photographs and drawings, and interviews were carried out with the people visiting them.

The methodology for the study was developed by CSBE's Associate Director Lara Zureikat. This first phase of the study was carried out by three architectural interns from the Jordan University of Science and Technology: Ruba Abu al-Haija, Dana Elfar, and Saja Hazaimeh, who worked under the supervision of CSBE staff members Mohammad al-Asad, Lara Zureikat, Joud Khasawneh, and Nur al-Fayez.

دراسة الأماكن العامة من خلال سلوك مستخدميها

دراسة قام بها مركز دراسات البيئة المبنية في سنة ٢٠١١

ركزت هذه الدراسة التي أجراها مركز دراسات البيئة المبنية على ثلاثة شوارع كانت أمانة عمان الكبرى قد أعادت تصميمها في السنوات العشر الأخيرة لتحسين حركة المشاة ونشاطاتهم، وهي شارع الرينبو في جبل عمان وشارع الوكالات في الصويفية وشارع الثقافة في الشميساني

إن الهدف من الدراسة هو مراقبة الأنماط السلوكية لمستخدمي الأماكن العامة في عمّان لمعرفة مدى نجاح هذه المساحات بصفتها أماكن عامة ودرجة المحافظة عليها والإعتناء بها وتوصيل هذه المعلومات للمسؤولين عن إتخاذ القرارات المتعلقة بها

ركزت هذه الدراسة على كيفية إستخدام الجمهور لهذه الشوارع الثلاثة. وتمت زيارة الشوارع في أوقات مختلفة من أيام مختلفة خلال فصل الصيف التي هي فترة الإستخدام الأعلى لها. وقد تم توثيق الشوارع والأنشطة فيها من خلال الصور والرسومات، بالإضافة إلى الإعتماد على مقابلات مع زوّار هذه الشوارع

قامت بتطوير منهجية هذه الدراسة مساعدة مدير مركز دراسات البيئة المبنية لارا زريقات. وقام بإعداد الجزء الأول منها ثلاث متدربات معماريات من الجامعة الأردنية للعلوم والتكنولوجيا: ربى أبو الهيجا ودانا الفار وسجى هزايمة اللواتي عملن تحت إشراف طاقم مركز دراسات البيئة المبنية محمد الأسد ولارا زريقات وجود الخصاونة ونور الفايز
