Mango Market
Mango Market is located in downtown Amman. It is situated between King Faysal and Basman streets, and provides a pedestrian link between them. Two of Amman’s most prominent merchants, the brothers Hamdi and Ibrahim Mango, commissioned the design of the market, which was completed in 1947. The complex was designed by an Egyptian architect, Mukhtar Saqr, who during the late-1940s also designed the Mango Villa, a two-unit residential building for Hamdi’s two sons Kamal and ‘Ali. The villa is located in Jabal Amman’s First Circle area. Saqr in addition designed another important residence in Amman during that period, the Bilbeisi House, which is also located in the First Circle area (additional information on these two residences is available in Mohammad al-Asad, Old Houses of Jordan. Amman: 1920 - 1950 (Amman: Turab, 1997).
The complex contains shops on the ground floor that mainly sell clothing items and fabrics. The shops face a T-shaped open space that runs through the market and connects the two streets bordering the site. The upper floors consist of residential apartments and office units. Upon its completion, it was Amman’s most upscale multi-purpose complex.
سوق منكو
يقع سوق منكو في منطقة وسط المدينة في عمان بين شارعيْ الملك فيصل وبسمان، ويكوّن ممراً يسمح للمشاة بالتنقل بين الشارعيْن. وقد قام بتشييد السوق الذي انتهى بناءه سنة 1947 الأخوان حمدي وإبراهيم منكو، اللذان كانا من أهم تجار عمان في ذلك الوقت. وقام بتصميم السوق المعمار المصري مختار صقر الذي صمم أيضاً فيلا منكو في أواخر الأربعينات في منطقة الدوار الأول في جبل عمّان. وتتكون الفيلا من طابقين سكنيين، واحد لكل من إبنيْ حمدي منكو كمال وعلي. كذلك صمم صقر منزلاً مهماً آخر في عمّان في نفس الفترة هو منزل البلبيسي الذي يقع أيضاً في منطقة الدوار الأول
يحتوي البناء في طابقه الأرضي على محلات تجارية تختص في الغالب ببيع الملابس والأقمشة. وتحيط المتاجرُ بساحة مفتوحة تأخذ شكل حرف “ت” لاتيني وتربط الشارعيْن اللذيْن يحدّا موقع البناء. وتحتوي الطوابق العليا على شقق سكنية ومكاتب. وكان البناء يُعتبر في الفترة التي تلت تشييده أرقى بناء متعدد الإستخدامات في عمّان
