Sketch Map of Petra

This “Sketch Map of Petra” from April 1929 was drawn by Tawfiq Cannan (Kan’an), and is based on a map developed earlier by Alois Musil.

Alois Musil (1866 – 1944) was an Austrian-Czech theologian, orientalist, explorer, and geographer, who had carried out extensive research through his journeys in Arabia and the Holy Land between 1895 and 1917. In 1898, he became the first European to visit the mid-eighth-century Umayyad palace of Qusayr ‘Amrah. His research trips and publications shed considerable light on the areas of East Jordan and Arabia, including the living conditions and customs of the Arab tribes living there.

Tawfiq Cannan (1882 – 1964) was a pioneering physician, medical researcher, and ethnographer born in Beit Jala, Palestine. He served as a medical officer in the Ottoman Army during the First World War. He also was the first President of the Palestine Arab Medical Association during the British Mandate period, and was the director of several hospitals in the Jerusalem area.

The map was found among the papers of Mohammad al-Asad (1893 – 1939), who held a number of administrative posts in the government of the Emirate of Transjordan during the 1920s and early 1930s. He was posted in various areas in the south of Jordan, including Aqaba, Wadi Musa, Ma’an, al-Shawbak, and al-Mazar.

We have marked the locations of the Khaznah (Treasury), Deir, Siq, and Roman theater in the map.

خارطة مبدئية للبتراء

إن هذه الخريطة المبدئية للبتراء التي رسمها توفيق كنعان والتي تعود إلى ١٩٢٩ مبنيه على خريطة كان قد رسمها ألواس موسيل.

إن ألواس موسيل ( ١٨٦٦ – ١٩٤٤) لاهوتي ومستشرق ومستكشف وجغرافي نمساوي –  تشيكي أجرى بحوثاً مكثفة من خلال رحلاته في الجزيرة العربية والأراضي المقدسة بين عامي ١٨٩٥ و ١٩١٧. وقد زار قصير عمرة الأموي الذي يعود إلى منتصف القرن الثامن في عام ١٨٩٨ ليصبح أول أوروبياً يصل إليه. وقد ركزت رحلاته البحثية وكتاباته على منطقة شرق الأردن والجزيرة العربية، وتطرقت إلى الظروف المعيشية وعادات القبائل العربية هناك.

أما توفيق كنعان (١٨٨٢ - ١٩٦٤)، فقد كان طبيبا رائداً ذا إهتمام بعلوم الإثنوغرافيا. وقد ولد في بيت جالا في فلسطين وأنهى دراسته الطبية في عام ١٩٠٥ من الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت (التي كانت تعرف في ذلك الوقت بالكلية الإنجيلية السورية)، وعمل طبيباً في الجيش العثماني خلال الحرب العالمية الأولى. وقد كان أول رئيس للجمعية الطبية العربية في فلسطين خلال فترة الإنتداب البريطاني، وكذلك أدار عدة مستشفيات في منطقة القدس.

تعود هذه الخريطة إلى أوراق محمد الأسد (١٨٩٣ - ١٩٣٩) الذي شغل عدداً من المناصب الإدارية في حكومة إمارة شرق الأردن خلال عقد العشرينات وأوائل عقد الثلاثينات من القرن الماضي. وقد تم تعينه في مناطق مختلفة في جنوب الأردن، بما في ذلك العقبة ووادي موسى ومعان والشوبك والمزار.
