Al-Hussein Youth City (The Sports City)
Al-Hussein Youth City, commonly known as the Sports City, is located in the northeastern part of Amman, along Queen Rania Street. Construction on it was initiated in 1964, and it is the first sports complex to be established in Jordan. In addition to sporting events, it also has hosted a number of important cultural and political events.
The complex was designed by the Belfast-based architectural office of Munce and Kennedy, and construction was carried out by the Jordanian Shahin Contracting Company. Munce and Kennedy also had designed a sports complex in the Libyan city of Tripoli during that period.
The complex covers an area of about 90 hectares and includes a number of sports fields and halls, swimming pools, and other sport facilities. It also accommodates Jordan’s largest sports stadium, the Amman International Stadium, which covers an area of 8000 sq.m. The complex in addition includes conference halls and spaces for public events, the most important of which is the Culture Palace, which is located in its northeastern part.
A forest, which covers one-third its total area, is located in its central part. Walking and jogging tracks have been installed in it. The addition of new buildings to the site over the years unfortunately has destroyed some of its forested areas.
Access to the sports facilities in the complex is membership based, but a number of its spaces in the central forest area are open to the public. Due to the low number of open public spaces in Amman, and although most of the spaces in the complex are designed to accommodate sports related activities, a high number of visitors use the complex for picnicking, which creates a major threat to the natural area as a result of vandalism and littering.

تقع مدينة الحسين للشباب - المعروفة أيضاً بالمدينة الرياضيّة في الجزء الشمالي الشرقي من عمّان على إمتداد شارع الملكة رانيا. وكان العمل عليها قد بدأ في عام 1964 لتكون أول مدينة رياضية في الأردن. وبالإضافة إلى الأحداث الرياضية، فقد استضافت عدداً من الأحداث الثقافيّة والسياسيّة الهامة.
تغطّي مدينة الحسين للشباب مساحة قدرها حوالي 90 هكتاراً، وتشتمل على عدد من المسابح والملاعب والقاعات والمرافق الرياضية. وتحتوي على أكبر ملعب في الأردن، وهو ستاد عمان الدولي الذي يغطي مساحة 8000 متراً مربعاً. وتضم مدينة الحسين للشباب بالإضافة إلى ذلك قاعات للمؤتمرات ومرافق للمناسبات العامة من أهمها قصر الثقافة الذي يقع في الجزء الشمالي الشرقي منها.
وقام بتصميم المشروع مكتب مُنْسي وكِنِدي من بلفاست ونفذته شركة شاهين للمقاولات من الأردن. وكان مكتب مُنْسي وكِنِدي قد صمم أيضاً في تلك الفترة مجمعاً رياضياَ في مدينة طرابلس الليبية.
وتغطي الغابات والمساحات الخضراء ثلث مساحة المدينة الإجمالية وتتمركز في وسطها، ويوجد فيها طرق وممرات مخصصة للركض والمشي. ولكن إضافة عدد من الأبنية للموقع عبر السنوات قد تسبب بإزالة بعض هذه الغابات والمساحات الخضراء.
ومع أنه على من يريد إستخدام مرافق المدينة الرياضيّة الرئيسيّة أن يشتري إشتراك عضوية فيها، إلا أن العديد من فراغاتها عبارة عن أماكن عامة. وبسبب قلة الأماكن العامة المفتوحة في عمّان، وبالرغم من أن معظم الأماكن في المدينة الرياضية مصممة للأنشطة الرياضية، إلا أن عدداً كبيراً من الزائرين يقصدونها للتنزه مما يشكّل تهديداً كبيراً للمساحات الطبيعية فيها بسبب التخريب وإلقاء النفايات.
