The Amman Citadel

The Amman Citadel is one of the city's most significant historical sites. The L-shaped site covers an area of 11.6 hectares. It is located on a hill that overlooks Amman’s downtown area, along King Ali bin al-Hussein Street. It is a very rich archaeological site that includes monuments such as the second-century Temple of Hercules and the eighth-century Umayyad Palace. The site also includes an archaeological museum that was established during the 1950s.

Since the Amman Citadel is located within Amman’s older and denser districts, it significantly stands out as the only large-scale open space in the area. Besides being an important tourist attraction, the open space also is a place for leisure and relaxation. In addition, it currently hosts public and private events and festivals as well as musical concerts. These activities, however, have come under criticism as they can inflict harm on the site's historical remains and are a source of disturbance for local residents because of the high levels of noise and traffic they generate.
